2012 Senior Citizens Coffee Group

Date 19th February 2012
Event First Senior Citizen's Coffee Group Meeting of the year 2012
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description The first Senior Citizens Coffee Group for the year 2012 was held on 19th Feb at the Howick Recreation Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Eighteen seniors attended this session and they were glad to be back to their usual club. We welcome Mrs Mani Seervai our new senior to join this club. After exchanging pleasantries and catching up with the latest happenings in our Parsee jagat back in Mumbai, we asked seniors what they would like to do this time. The seniors were happy to play Housie and so we started the day with a cuppa and parsee saria courtesy of Benifer Irani and Thrity Mistry.

ZANZ organises this session every month for seniors free of cost. It provides a platform for Seniors to meet and socialise and enjoy the companionship in a typical parsee atmosphere.

After the snacks, all eyes were focussed on the housie tickets as we played a couple of games.

Finally it was that time of the day when we wanted to celebrate the birthdays of our Seniors, Noshir Elavia and Mani Mowji. A delicious banana cake prepared by one of our committee members was enjoyed by all. Everyone joined to the tune of Happy birthday song. There were plenty of snacks available on that day and everyone enjoyed the day.

Our thanks to Paeterasp and Anahita Vevaina for being volunteers on that day.

Our next senior’s session will be held on 18th March. To celebrate Jamshedi Nowruz, we have decided to take our Seniors for picnic to Western Springs and have lunch there. This will provide a good outdoor opening for the seniors to enjoy. Watch this space for more details.

We would like to thank our member Navaz Karbhari for sponsoring this session of SCCG.

If you know of any Zarthosti seniors who would like to join this group please contact Minoo on 532 9832 or Roshni on 534 9786.

Date 18th March 2012
Event Second Senior Citizen's Coffee Group Meeting of the year 2012
Venue Western Springs Park
Description ZANZ organised a picnic for our Senior Citizens at the Western spring on 17th March 2012. Our volunteers picked up the seniors from their homes / rest homes and by 10:30 a.m. our seniors had settled at the venue. Fifteen seniors attended this session. This session was different because we wanted to celebrate Jamshedi Nowruz in a picnic-like atmosphere.

Before starting with games we served our seniors samosas, mutton cutlets and juice. It was then game time and we decided to play "Simon says do this" and "Simon says do that". As the game progressed our seniors were smart enough to know the tricks and delayed their action so as to stay in the game. The seniors were then demanding to play their favourite game "Housie". We played a few games of housie with different variations.

It was a nice day so we decide to take our seniors for a walk through the Western Springs Park. They were at peace with themselves and enjoyed the open expanse of land and greenery. Adding to this picturesque setting was the lovely sight of watching the ducks and swans swimming lazily in the water or resting on land. It was a soothing and serene experience for everyone.

We then served the seniors with chicken rolls, jalebis and soft drinks. We played another game of housie and then it was close to 2:30 p.m. and time for us to return back.

We would like to thank our volunteers Kairus Hansotia, Paeterasp and Anahita Vevaina, Benifer Irani and Minoo Siganporia for helping out on that day.

Our next senior's session will be held on 15th April at our usual venue- Howick Recreation Club from 10.00 a.m. onwards.

We would also like to thank Khushnuma Balsara for sponsoring this session of SCCG. She sponsored this event in memory of her late parents who passed away last year.

If you know of any Zarthosti seniors who would like to join this group, please contact Minoo on 532 9832 or Roshni on 534 9786.

 Date 15th April 2012
Event Third Senior Citizen's Coffee Group Meeting of the year 2012
 Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description Our third Senior Citizens Coffee Group session for 2012 was held at the Howick Recreation Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on 15th April 2012. Seventeen seniors graced this event.

For the seniors, the day starts with having chai. So it was tea and our usual snacks. As soon as they were settled we decided to play something different this time. "Feed cookies to the cookie monster" was the name of the game. This game is played on similar lines as "Tail the Donkey" but with a bit of variation.

Each senior was blindfolded and given three cookies. On a wall was glued a poster of a smiling face of cookie monster with the mouth wide open. The idea of the game was to affix these three cookies as close to the mouth as possible. The seniors were blind folded by aapri vahali Benifer Irani and led slowly to the poster. Sheri Vaghchipwala won this game. Every one enjoyed the game and were given chocolate bars.

After playing this game we thought our Seniors would be interested in playing carrom but it was not to be and instead there was a loud call from all to play housie. We played two housie games and once again our popular member Benifer Irani was in demand to call out the numbers. As it was Hormazd roj on that day, we thought the first prize of housie will be awarded to jaldi seven (seven letters in Hormazd) instead of our usual jaldi five. A bit of giggle and laughter always goes hand in hand with calling out the housie numbers. It was fun and the seniors were in high spirits.

It was then time to celebrate birthdays of our seniors Khorshed Sethna and Perviz Mogrelia. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" and the cake was shared by all. It gives us immense pleasure to see smiling faces when these birthdays are being celebrated. They cherish these moments of love, happiness and care.

We would like to convey our thanks to Mrs Navaz Karbhari for sponsoring this session. Benifer Irani was our volunteer on that day.

Our next session will be held on 20th May at the same venue.

If you know of any Zarthosti seniors who would like to join this group please contact Minoo on 532 9832 or Roshni on 534 9786.

The hosts offered our seniors Parsi pegs and choices of wine, beer, shandy, whisky or juice. This was followed by lunch - sumptuous mutton biryani, masala dal and mutter paneer with naan and salad.

Date 19th August 2012
Event Seventh Senior Citizen's Coffee Group Meeting of the year 2012
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description "Parsee Navu Varas Ujavye". Welcome 1382 Y.Z.!!

The Parsee New Year was on Saturday 18th Aug. This was celebrated in style and everyone enjoyed the dinner and dance organised by the Zoroastrian Youth of NZ under the auspices of ZANZ.

The following day, Sunday 19th Aug, was the day our seniors were looking forward to celebrate the New Year with their friends at HRC .Our seniors were ready and dressed for the occasion. Fifteen seniors graced this event.

Our day started with "Sal Mubarak" greetings and "Tamune gani duva laagse". Our seniors quickly settled to their routine of having tea / coffee and snacks. We had two bowls of sev, thanks to our Parsee families who prepared this for the ZANZ Jashan held on Saturday. To top it all and make it a typical Parsee nasto, we also served dahi with the sev.

The stage was set as we created an atmosphere of a mini auditorium. The movie "Ferrari ki Sawaari", a Hindi drama comedy, was selected by our seniors. This movie is a story of small guys, their big dreams, and how one night changes their lives forever. Boman Irani ably supported by Sharman Joshi gave a wonderful performance. The movie ended at 1:30 p.m.

It was then time for "Jamva Chaloji" as per our Parsee baugs and otlas. Lajjatdar Chicken Pulao, masala Dal and kachumber was served for lunch. The seniors relished this tasty food and everyone ate to their heart's content. No Parsee function is complete without "Lagan nu custard". And so, it was to be on this special day! The aroma of the delicious food was permeating the main foyer of HRC.

It was then time to celebrate our seniors' birthday. We celebrated the birthday of Mrs Shirin Bulsara. We also acknowledged Perviz Daruwalla and Homai Elavia who are currently in India. Everyone sang "Happy birthday" and the cake was enjoyed by all. The cake was kindly donated by the triad of Anahita Daruwalla, Nazneen Wadia and Dilnavaz Kaikobadi who won it in a game at the ZANZ New Year function. Our seniors felt greatly appreciated and loved for having an exclusive day of celebration just for them.

ZANZ would like to thank our volunteers Minoo Siganporia, Benifer Irani and Paeterasp Vevaina. Our two committee members Roshni Daruwalla and Anaheeta Sethna were also present as always. Benifer Irani has been an ardent supporter of ZANZ's SCCG and she entertains the seniors with her signature punch lines. Paeterasp did a magnificent job of organising the movie, projector and screen. Zubbin Navroji lent us the sound system. Kaizad Karkaria did a wonderful job of preparing the wonderful food. Many seniors even took some home for their families.

ZANZ organises the SCCG on the third Sunday of every month and it has been a proud privilege of this association to recognise and honour our seniors.

Our next session will be held on 16th September. If you know of any seniors who would like to join this group then please contact us.

With best regards
