2011 Senior Citizens Coffee Group

Date 13th February 2011
Event First Senior Citizen's Coffee Group Meeting of the year 2011
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description Our first Seniors get together for the year was held at the Howick Recreation Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on 13th February 2011. It was an awesome day with the sun resplendent in its glory and bestowing its blessings for a wonderful beginning to this year.

Our seniors were picked up from their houses before 10 a.m. by the committee members and our volunteers. One of our seniors commented "Gano vakhat thai gayo apune badha ne maline, majenu thayu tamhe aya to. We are really looking forward to this day". Seventeen seniors attended this session and it looked like we were running short of space.

We started the day with two yatha ahu vairyos and one ashem vohu in memory of our member Marazban Laly's departed soul. We then had garma garam chai, khari biscuit and gujrati chevdo. Since our seniors were meeting after nearly two months they were busy trying to catch up with each other as to how they enjoyed their holidays. It was then time to have some fun. We played Musical arms outside in the backyard. Tehmurasp Vazifdar was the lucky winner. As it was very hot outside we then decided to play housie games.

We played four housie games and once again our popular member Benifer Irani was in demand to call out the numbers. Each game was played with a different variation and everyone seemed to be engrossed concentrating on their housie tickets. Chocolate bars were given away as prizes. During the course of the games we also celebrated birthdays of our seniors Tehmurasp Tampal and Mani Mowjee. A delicious chocolate was shared by all.

This senior citizen session was sponsored by one of our members who would like to remain anonymous. This was the fourth of the ten sessions this gentleman has sponsored. Benifer Irani, Paeterasp & Anahita Vevaina and Benaifer Aspar were volunteers on that day.

Our next session will be held on 13th March at the same venue. We require volunteers to pick up our seniors before 10 a.m. from their home / rest home (Pakuranga/ Howick area) and drop them after 12.00 p.m. The committee members bring as many seniors to these sessions as they can and have no more room in their cars. Sadly this means that we sometimes have to turn away some seniors.

Description ZANZ hosted Senior Citizens Coffee Club on 13th March, 10th April and 8th May 2011 at the Howick Recreation Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The popularity of this event demands that we host this each month. Our seniors are eager and excited to join and continue with this club. The attendance at this club ranges from 19 to 21 seniors.

Our seniors are picked up from their houses before 10 a.m. by the committee members and our volunteers. We start our day with garma garam phudina chai, khari biscuits, chips and gujrati chevdo. Once our seniors are settled we start with fun activities. We play Musical arms and Passing the parcel. Housie games are enjoyed by all seniors so in every get together they are a must. Housie games keep the seniors motivated and interested and so it is a challenge for the committee members to play each game with a bit of variation.

Date 12th June 2011
Event Fifth Senior Citizen's Coffee group meeting of the year 2011
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description Companionship, Support, Entertainment and Respect. These are the attributes observed in the Senior Citizens Coffee Group being held each month under the auspices of ZANZ with help from our evergreen volunteers. Our fifth session for this year was held on 12th June 2011 at HRC from 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. This session was different from our usual since we had organised to show a Bollywood movie. As mentioned in our earlier notice, "Khatta Meetha" movie was chosen by our seniors.

The seniors were picked up from their homes by volunteers and committee members before 10 a.m. The day started with great expectations from our seniors. They were excited and looking forward to have a wonderful day. We started the day with our usual tea / coffee and snacks. We played a housie game to keep the seniors entertained while the projector and the sound system were being set up. Eighteen seniors graced this occasion. The movie kept our seniors glued to their chairs. The tempo of this movie was gripping and at the same time hilarious with Akshay Kumar at his best.

At 12:30 p.m. we had an interval for lunch. Delicious chicken biryani garnished with boiled eggs was ordered from Paradise Restaurant along with dahi kachumber and masala gravy. The seniors were all praises for the wonderful lunch they enjoyed. After lunch, it was back to the screening of remaining part of this movie. We distributed dessert during the second half. Mouth watering jalebi with ice cream and cake was served courtesy of our member Benifer Irani who has time and again proved to be a valuable resource to ZANZ and the Management Committee.

Mirch masala of drama, entertainment, corruption, good guy vs bad guy and triumph of goodness over evil in the end kept the seniors very quiet in their seats. Our movie finished at 2:35 p.m. It was then time to celebrate the birthday of our senior Dr Minoo Daruwalla. A magnificent cake prepared by Anahita Vevaina was the perfect choice to celebrate his birthday. Everyone joined and sang birthday song. Inadvertently we forgot to mention in our previous write up that we also celebrated birthday of our senior Mrs Khorshed Sethna in our April session.

Finally it was time to wrap up the innings as it was nearing 3 p.m. The seniors were very happy and enjoyed this day to the fullest. Our thanks to Paeterasp Vevaina for organising the screening of this movie. He took all the trouble of bringing a projector and sound system and ensured everything worked out well. Thanks to Anahita Vevaina for preparing a lovely cake for all of us. Benaifer Aspar and Benifer Irani also gave us a helping hand to serve meals and clean the hall. These volunteers work in the background but it is apt to bring this to our members' attention.

Everyone including the committee members contributed to make this day an eventful day for our seniors. This senior citizen's session was partially sponsored by our member who would like to remain anonymous.

Description The weather pundits in the preceding days had forecasted bad weather with severe gales and storms. But, it was not to be! On this awesome day, nineteen seniors were picked up by volunteers and brought to HRC. It was 10.00 a.m. and our sixth session for the year had begun.

After the usual greetings were completed, it was time to settle them for morning tea and snacks. In this session we had four new members joining this club. Please welcome Sam Printer, Minocher & Daulat Jamasnejad and Naoroji Kharas. Sadly our evergreen seniors Tehmurasp and Mana Vazifdar could not make it on this day.

We played a housie game to keep the seniors entertained. Passing the parcel introduced some funny moments for all of us. We continued with two more games of housie. Winners were given chocolates.

Finally it was that time of the day when we wanted to celebrate the birthdays of our seniors, Dr Minoo Daruwalla and Mrs Thrity Mistry. Thanks to Anahita Daruwalla for donating a cake. A second cake was also donated by Mr Sheri Vaghchhipawala. Everyone joined in and sang the birthday song.

Date 21st August 2011
Event Seventh Senior Citizen's Coffee group meeting of the year 2011
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description "Aavo ZANZ Saathe Parsee Navu Varas celebrate kariye".

This was basically the theme ZANZ had in mind for the seniors' session in August. We decided to celebrate our Parsee new year 1381 Y.Z. on 21st August at HRC. At 9:30 a.m. our volunteers revved their car engines to pick up the seniors from their house / rest homes and brought them to HRC. Eighteen seniors were present in this session.

We started our day with "Sal Mubarak" greetings and the seniors settled quickly for the morning tea/coffee and snacks. Garma garam sev was also served thanks to Perin Daruwalla and Perviz Daruwalla. This session was going to be a special one as we had decided beforehand that we were going to play Antakshri and also arrange for lunch for our seniors. Our manita and janita member Baji Antia was present to host this competition.

We had two teams under the captainship of Perviz Daruwalla and Mani Mowjee. We played twelve rounds of Antakshri. The first half of six rounds was based on identifying and singing the song from a short tune played by us. The second half was based on singing the song from the beginning after we played the tune mid-way through. Both teams had their scores tied on 22 points. The seniors really stepped up to the occasion as the songs involved a mix of pre 1970's and some new songs also. It was then time to play two games of housie.

Finally, the temptation of Prawn Curry rice with sekta ni singh couldn't be resisted any longer. Our seniors relished this tamtamta lunch with kachumber. By then we were nearing 12:30 and it was time to celebrate the seniors' birthdays. We celebrated the birthdays of Perviz Daruwalla, Homai Elavia & Shirin Bulsara. Everyone sang "Happy birthday" and the cake was enjoyed by all. But wait.....there was still more to come. No celebration of auspicious day is complete without dessert so it was yummy mango mousse to end the day. A splendid treat to end the day!

ZANZ would like to thank our volunteers Benifer Irani, Tanaz Siganporia, and Anahita Vevaina for organising the lunch and cakes. Benifer Irani has been a magnificent supporter of this club and we recognize this ardent support at all times. We would also like to thank Baji Antia, Franak Kabir, Binaifer Aspar and Kashmira Kambata for their help on this day. As the session was ending, Benifer Irani gave away body lotion to all present.

This senior citizen session was sponsored by one of our member who would like to remain anonymous. This was the last of the ten sessions this gentleman has sponsored and we thank him for his generosity.

Our next session will be held on 11th September.

If you know of any seniors who would like to join this group then please contact us.

Event Eighth Senior Citizen's Coffee group meeting of the year 2011
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description Our seniors met together once again in this year for their coffee club on 11th September 2011 at the HRC. ZANZ organises this session every month so that our seniors can socialise with their friends, enjoy the companionship and feel that they are valued. It was one of those days when the weather wasn't so kind and the euphoria over the Rugby World Cup opening night had subsided. And yes, our seniors were aware that New Zealand was the host for the RWC.

After the usual greetings were completed, our volunteers prepared tea / coffee and served the seniors with snacks.

It was then time to play a couple of housie games, some of which were traditional and straight forward and others which had a Rugby theme. We played five housie games during the course of this session. Winners were given chocolates.

Finally it was that time of the day when we wanted to celebrate the birthdays of our seniors Mrs Gulnar Irani and Mrs Jeroo Palkhiwalla. Unfortunately both were not present at this session.

Before wrapping up our innings for the day, one of the senior suggested that we should observe a minute of silence in remembrance of the terrorist attack that happened ten years ago on this day.

Our thanks go to Paeterasp and Anahita Vevaina and Benifer Aspar for being volunteers on that day.

Our next seniors' session will be held on 9th October at the same venue.

This senior citizens session was sponsored by our member Navaz Karbhari.

Description Another month to celebrate our Seniors meeting together for the Tenth time this year! It was an awesome day with blue skies and the mighty SUN making its presence felt by raising the day temperature to 17 degrees.

The volunteers were up and about, ready to bring the Seniors to our usual venue at HRC on Sunday the 13th of November 2011. ZANZ organises this session every month for seniors free of cost. It provides a platform for Seniors to meet and socialise and enjoy the companionship in a typical Parsee atmosphere (with parse type snacks). After the usual greetings were completed, our volunteers prepared tea / coffee and served the seniors with snacks and our ever-loving Parsee khari biscuit (reminiscent of our atmosphere in Parsee baugs and colonies).

We suggested that our seniors go out and play Musical arms in the backyard but they were not so keen to stretch their legs so again it was back to housie games. Before that, we played a game of "Do this, Do that". Benifer Irani led the way much to the enjoyment of our seniors by making them do some funny postures. We then played two games of housie and the winners were given away pack of chocolates kind courtesy of Shenaz Anoashak Irani.

Date 4th December 2011
Event Eleventh Senior Citizen's Coffee group meeting of the year 2011
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description This popular event was held on 4th December 2011 at HRC from 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. As this was the last time we were meeting for 2011, we decided to throw some extra goodies and celebrate this event in style.

Eighteen seniors graced this occasion. We started the day with usual tea/ coffee and snacks. Our volunteers, in the meantime, set the projector and other equipments ready for the show. The curtains were drawn and the action was about to begin. “Shhhh...chalo havey movie sharu thaij. Jara dhyan thi jov”.

We decided to show the movie “READY”, an Indian comedy starring Salman Khan, Asin, Paresh Rawal and others. The movie was gripping and one never knew what would happen next as there were enough of surprises and turn of events which kept the seniors glued to their seats. Paresh Rawal and Salman Khan kept the movie going with their hilarious punches and antics. Salman Khan still holds that edge which entertains the masses. It was an excellent movie which kept our seniors thoroughly entertained!

After the movie, we served the seniors with “Butter chicken and Rice” and for vegetarians “Butter Paneer with Rice” was available. After lunch, we served “Mango pulp with ice-cream” for dessert. This lunch and dessert was prepared and sponsored by a ZANZ member who would like to remain anonymous. The seniors relished this meal & dessert and enjoyed to their hearts’ content.

We then celebrated the birthdays of our seniors Pervez Irani and Tehmurasp Vazifdar. Unfortunately Tehmurasp Vazifdar was unable to attend this session. A mouthwatering Christmas cake was donated by one of our committee members. Everyone sang “Happy birthday” to celebrate this occasion. The seniors were given Christmas hats to celebrate this session a la Christmas style.

Finally, at the end, we played two games of “Passing the parcel”. Winners were given prizes along with two consolation prizes. At 2:50 p.m. it was time to wrap our innings for the day and also for the year. All our seniors were very happy and left with a big smile on their faces. They thanked the volunteers and ZANZ committee for organising this magnificent event every month.

We would like to thank our volunteers Paeterasp and Anahita Vevaina for organising the movie and sound equipments. A big thanks also goes to the couple who arranged for lunch and dessert. There was enough food left over for the seniors to take home to enjoy again.

It has been a privilege to see several of our members sponsoring these sessions and meals. The undercurrent of generosity and pious nature of Zoroastrians is very much alive in Aotearoa.

This senior citizen session was sponsored by our member Navaz Karbhari. Our next session will be held on 19th February 2012. We will send out a separate notice / invitation for the year 2012.

If you know of any seniors who would like to join this group then please contact us.

The ZANZ Management Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers (Minoo Siganporia, Paeterasp and Anahita Vevaina, Benifer Irani and Binaifer Aspar) and committee members (Roshni Daruwalla and Anaheeta Sethna) who have generously given their time and effort towards the ZANZ Senior Citizens Coffee Group every month. They silently and unfailingly work to making these events memorable and enjoyable for our seniors each month. We would not be able to host these groups without their help and we thank them sincerely.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to our donors who sponsor these events every month. Thank you for your generosity over the years.

With best regards
